Hattiesburg police chief on drone technology for first responders

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WHLT) – During Tuesday’s Hattiesburg City Council meeting, Hattiesburg Police Chief Hardy Sims presented information on drone technology. This was part of the Technology for First Responders initiative.

Using information from the drone program in Chula Vista, CA, Sims spoke on how it can be used to increase response times to calls and de-escalate potentially dangerous situations to both citizens and officers. He also gave details on how Chula Vista ensures transparency with its drone use and protects privacy.

The city has hosted three town hall meetings so far, where residents were able to ask questions and provide feedback, and we have two more meetings on the calendar for this month:

  • Ward 4: Thursday, February 22 @ 7 p.m. | Sigler Center – 315 Conti Street
  • Ward 5: Tuesday, February 27 @ 7 p.m. | Lillie Burney Learning Center – 901 Ida Avenue

If you are or were unable to attend your ward’s town hall meeting, you can also provide feedback via an online survey.
